about the blog

The idea behind this blog started with an “aha!” moment. A television news report talked about the financial difficulties of the sandwich generation in this economy and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing–there’s actually a name that defines my situation! I’m part of the sandwich generation! Eureka!

I was so excited, I posted my discovery on Facebook, sharing that there is finally a term for those adults who are caring for their children on one side and their aging parents on the other.

My Facebook friends broke the news to me that the term is not that new, and the concept even older (that I did know). Nonetheless, I was so enthused, I hurried over to register the domain name sandwichedin.com–thinking that some day, when I have time to blog in my spare moments, this may be a good topic.

Needless to say, the domain sat parked for a few months until an assignment for my graduate course in digital media was to create a blog on a topic we were passionate about. Not being the one with many hobbies/passions (read ‘about  my sandwich’ to see why), I was grasping at straws when I remembered my neglected domain. Spare time or not, it was time to start blogging!

Sandwiched-In is about sharing my personal stories as well as some resources I come across. I will also be interviewing some “experts” whose work is focused on the elderly. I hope it serves as the beginning of a new community of sandwichers who want to share their stories as well.

I am not expert, and this site is not about advice or tips. I simply hope to serve as a source of inspiration (and occasional information) for others in similar situations.

Bon apetit!

    Rodika,

Awesome blog site! I love the humor and the way you’ve laid it out. It’s fun to read – invites rather than demands. I’m so glad you’ve included this section, “About the Blog,” so I have a full picture of what it’s about.

A friend of mine is a social worker who specializes in working with seniors and their “sandwich” fillings. I’m forwarding this to her.

    Thank you!

    Rae
